Log line (1): Passages from War and Peace are woven into the lives of Cicely's residents and visitors, who experience Tolstoyesque nightmares and Dostoyevskian passions.
Synopsis (1):

When old friend, Nikolai Ivanovich Appollanov (guest star Elya Baskin), comes to town for his yearly visit, Cicely's townfolk are thrilled, all except Maurice Minnifield. While the rest of Cicely is embracing the arrival of their musically gifted friend and his Slavic influence with gusto, Maurice's hell-bent patriotism leads him to challenge the town's adopted Russkie to a duel.

While Holling struggles to overcome his dream-riddled nights by following Tolstoy's example and doing something reckless and wild, Ed experiences something reckless and wild of his own --first love. Smitten by a red-haired preacher's daughter named Lightfeather (guest star Dana Andersen), Ed woos her with love letters penned by his prolific friend, deejay Chris Stevens.

Background
(Production Bible):

Joel saw Nikolai at Carnegie Hall a couple of years ago with Elaine and her mother. Joel interned at St. Vincent's. Holling's a Canuck. Ruth-Anne's had two husbands. Nikolai was a Greco-roman Bronze Medalist. Lightfeather worked at the Dairy Delite. Chris doesnÕt like freckles. His first trip into the realm of the senses was at seven, in a trailer park in Wheeler near the sump.

Facts to Wax
(Production Bible):
Nikolai gives Ed a yarmulke that belonged to Woody Allen's grandfather, Cantor Konigsberg. Ruth-Anne, Maggie, Shelly & Chris seem to know the game of chess quite well, but Joel is baffled.
